Viewpoint School to honor the past, embrace the future with Athletic Hall of Fame ...Middle East

All kinds of memories came back to Alyssa Hinojosa as she showed her fiancé around the Viewpoint School campus, where she played soccer in high school.

“I thought I’d forget a lot about high school but ever since visiting, everything has came back,” Hinojosa said. “The memories of how bad I was at pottery — those little things. How much fun I had in a math classroom, and then all the good memories on the soccer team.”

Hinojosa was at the Love of Learning wall when her reminiscing was interrupted by a surprise. Her high school coach, Travis Kikugawahe, along with head of school Mark McKee and former athletic director Patrick Moyal were on hand to tell her she’s going to be part of the first-ever Viewpoint Athletics Hall of Fame class.

“It caught me completely off guard,” Hinojosa said with a laugh. “I think the first thing I said to them was, ‘Do you guys remember me?’ ”

The 2016 Viewpoint grad who went on to be a four-year starter at the University of Oregon is one of six people who are part of the inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class — and on the heels of Viewpoint girls soccer’s CIF Southern Section championship this winter, too.

Moyal, Viewpoint’s former athletic director of 35 years, is also an inductee in addition to Christian Juzang (basketball, 2016, Harvard), Miye Oni (2015, basketball, Yale), Darby Sedighan (2000, volleyball, Chapman) and Chaney Sheffield (1998, baseball, Harvard).

“This is a great opportunity for us to honor the success and the excellence that we’ve had here before,” Josh Frechette, director of athletics, said. “We certainly have a long roster of people who have made big impacts on our community both in the athletic realm.”

Viewpoint is a small TK-12 school with roughly 25 students per classroom, but that doesn’t mean it’s short on athletic accomplishments. The Patriots have won 190 league championships, 27 CIF-SS championships and four CIF State championships in addition to 11 CIF All-Academic Team banners.

The girls soccer team brought Viewpoint its latest CIF-SS title by beating Heritage 2-1 in the Division 5 championship.

It’s the second CIF-SS girls soccer championship for the Patriots and it’s especially meaningful for first-year head coach Zaira Fonseca, who coached many of the players since they came to Viewpoint in the fourth grade.

“I’ve coached these girls for such a long time already,” Fonseca said, “so to have that CIF championship was the cherry on top of the cake. It’s been a phenomenal ride these past couple of weeks and we’re still in awe about how special it all came together.”

Hinojosa, who now lives in Missouri, has watched the soccer program’s success from afar and knows how impactful a sports experience can be. She grew up in Sylmar in a single-parent household alongside her twin brother. Life changed when she got to Viewpoint.

“I’m a first-generation college student, so an opportunity at Viewpoint was just a saving grace,” she said. “Like, I’m gonna make it. Life is going to be set. Viewpoint is so invested in their students, they’re so proud of their students. They’ll do anything to help you be successful and get you where you want to be.”

Years later, Viewpoint is striving to uphold that standard. This year’s annual benefit is slated for May 3 and will both showcase the Athletic Hall of Fame and raise funds for scholar-athletes’ financial support.

“We’ve worked really hard as a school to try to make this opportunity to be a student at Viewpoint available to as many people as we can,” Frechette said. “The life lessons that you learn through athletics is the most important thing and we honor that with the idea that the journey is more important than the end result.”
