Top-seeded University never allowed No. 32 Eagle Ridge any confidence, any momentum or any offensive traction, as the undefeated Bulldogs blew past the Warriors 56-20 in the Class 4A girls basketball state tournament Friday in Greeley.
University led 12-4 after one quarter and 29-11 after two.
The Bulldogs were just getting started.
University fully found its rhythm on both ends of the floor in the third quarter, outscoring Eagle Ridge 23-3 to extend its lead to 42-14.
The Bulldogs improved to 24-0 overall and will face No. 16 St. Mary’s Academy (14-9) in the second round of the state tournament, which also serves as a regional title game.
The Warriors ended their season with an 8-16 record. University didn’t allow Eagle Ridge more than seven points in a single quarter.
Junior Maddie McNair and senior Allizzey Madrigal led the Bulldogs offensively with 10 points apiece. Senior Addison Harding chipped in seven points, five rebounds, four steals and a block.
“Starting the postseason, everyone’s record is 0-0,” McNair said. “It’s really anyone’s game at this point. You can’t go in with a big head, but you’ve got to also have confidence and trust in your team. If you trust yourself and you trust your teammates, it’s going to go smoothly.”
