The Blackhawks got way out in front of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline by moving Seth Jones over this past weekend. With their big move taken care of, the Blackhawks front office can turn their attention to some of the other interesting pieces on the roster, some of whom are still generating plenty of buzz around the league.
I wandered around the interwebs on your behalf and did my best to collect the latest Blackhawks trade gossip. We’ll start with the guy who might be one of the more popular names on the market right now (who many of us would prefer is not traded).
Nick Wosika-Imagn ImagesRyan Donato Trade Buzz
On Monday, Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun at The Athletic wrote what they’re hearing about all 32 teams in the NHL as we get closer to the trade deadline. Here’s part of what they wrote about the Blackhawks:
The Blackhawks have a highly coveted rental in Ryan Donato, who is having a career season, plus a slew of other veterans on expiring contracts who won’t be in nearly as much demand. It’s worth noting that while Chicago has oodles of cap space to potentially take on another team’s cap casualty with a sweetener, it does not have any remaining salary retention spots to deploy this season.
Also Monday, Mark Lazerus and Scott Powers at The Athletic updated their Blackhawks trade board. Here’s part of what they said about Donato:
The Blackhawks will undoubtedly get calls for Donato over the next week, but Davidson doesn’t feel an urgency to move him. Donato has value on the Blackhawks now, even if they don’t re-sign him. If they move him, it’ll make sense in the biggest picture.
Daily Faceoff updated their trade board on Monday. They now have Donato at No. 13.
The Fourth Period still has Donato at No. 21 on their big board on Monday.
Donato’s performance this season, coupled with his attractive cap hit, will make him a hot commodity in Chicago. He’s an unrestricted free agent this July and will command plenty of interest leading up to the trade deadline.
TFP has Winnipeg, Los Angeles, Ottawa, Toronto, New Jersey and Carolina interested in Donato. From that list, Ottawa (and, obviously, LA) were watching the Blackhawks on Monday night.
Nick Kypreos at Sportsnet updated his draft board and the only Blackhawks player on it is Donato. I questioned including it here because of this statement:
The Blackhawks have now used up all three of their retention slots, however, meaning a buyer will have to take on Donato at full value or else find a third team to get involved.
Donato entered Monday night with as many even strength goals as, among others, Mikko Rantanen, Brayden Point, Sebastian Aho and Alex DeBrincat and somehow we’re trying find a reason for a team to worry about taking on what’s left his Donato’s $2M cap hit? C’mon… really?
Other Blackhawks Trade Bait
Here’s some of the other notes from the Lazerus/Powers board:
On Petr Mrázek:Daily Faceoff (Mrázek is No. 17):
The Hawks are going to try to move Mrázek this week, but it will be tough, because they don’t have any retained salary transaction slots left and Mrázek has one more year left. But they could find a third party broker, and that would make for a reliable goalie at a low acquisition cost signed for next year at half price, too.
From the Lazerus/Powers board:
Now, by adding [Spencer] Knight in the Jones trade, the Blackhawks have three NHL-caliber goalies signed for next season and a fourth (Arvid Söderblom) whom they’ll certainly want to re-sign as a restricted free agent. The Blackhawks will prioritize Knight and Söderblom, so where does that leave Mrázek and [Laurent] Brossoit?
The Blackhawks would love to move Mrázek if they could in the next week. There are a couple of challenges, though. One, Mrázek doesn’t look anything like he did earlier in the season. In November, he posted a .927 save percentage. Then, he had an .821 save percentage in December, a .904 in January and an .850 in February. For the season, he’s at .890.
On Lukas Reichel:From the Lazerus/Powers board:
The Blackhawks aren’t motivated to move Reichel, but they’ll certainly listen if someone approaches them with an interesting offer. … If he can get on a roll over the next week, that could affect things, too.
From Daily Faceoff (Reichel is, ironically, No. 27):
They’d prefer a hockey trade. But there’s enough teams intrigued by his high-end speed and talent that will overlook his lack of consistency and compete, thinking they can turn him into a more complete player.
On Craig Smith:From the Lazerus/Powers board:
Donato leads the Blackhawks in goals and points per 60 minutes of five-on-five play, but Smith quietly has been second in both categories. In limited minutes and despite missing nearly a month with a back injury, Smith has eight goals and seven assists in 38 games. Modest numbers, to be sure, but he can provide some depth scoring and be had for a song
On Connor Murphy:Daily Faceoff still has him at No. 21, but I remain skeptical the Blackhawks will move him now that Jones is gone.
