The Northern Colorado and Montana men’s basketball teams are tied for first place in the Big Sky Conference standings with one game remaining in the regular season.
UNC’s hopes for its first conference title in more than a decade are much brighter than before the Bears and Grizzlies tipped off for games Saturday night.
UNC, 14-3 Big Sky and 22-8 overall, joined the Grizzlies in the race for the regular-season title — and top seed at next week’s conference tournament — by beating Northern Arizona 83-73 Saturday night in Flagstaff, Arizona.
Langston Reynolds and Jaron Rillie both scored 20 points against the Lumberjacks. Rillie was 8 of 12 from the field, 4 of 4 from 3-point range and grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. Reynolds hit 7 of 9 from the floor and 6 of 8 from the foul line. He pulled down five rebounds.
Isaiah Hawthorne added 16 points (6 of 9) and Brock Wisne hit 5 of 7 shots for 13 points. UNC shot 62.5% from the floor and 53.8% from 3-point range.

The rest of Lumberjacks were a combined 14 of 24. Jayden Jackson was the only other NAU player in double figures with 15 points.
Montana lost in overtime earlier in the day Saturday at Portland State, also falling to 14-3 in the conference with the end of a 10-game winning streak.
UNC plays at Weber State on Monday in the Bears’ regular-season finale. Montana (21-9 overall) returns home to host Eastern Washington.
Northern Colorado beat Weber State 89-72 in the conference opener for both teams Jan. 2 in Greeley.
UNC wins the outright regular-season title if it beats Weber State and Montana loses to Eastern Washington.
If UNC and Montana both win Monday, the teams are regular-season co-champs and UNC gets the top seed at the conference tournament on a tiebreaker according to UNC assistant athletic director for strategic communications Michael High.
Northern Colorado won its only Big Sky regular-season and conference tournament championships in 2010-11 when it hosted the tournament. The championships were later vacated because of NCAA violations on use of an ineligible player.
