Well, this morning we were wondering when we would find out about the Tokyo Series plan for Matt Shaw and Nico Hoerner, and although the news on Shaw is tentatively positive, that’s not the case on Hoerner.
I wouldn’t consider this a setback, because we always knew his rehab progression might put him past the ill-timed series in Japan, but it’s a bummer to know it won’t happen for him:
Cubs 2b Nico Hoerner won't go to Japan with the team to open the season next month. He's still recovering from flexor tendon surgery. He'll stay back to continue his rehab.
— Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) February 27, 2025Just terrible timing for Nico Hoerner and the Cubs, but hopefully this is the right decision in the long run.
Keep in mind, by missing these two regular season games, Hoerner effectively gets two more weeks to gear up for the Stateside regular season. You don’t want to see him miss ANY games, obviously, but if the trade off is that you give up two games for a much better shot that he’s fully himself during the other 160? Go for it.
As for what this means for the roster, that might depend a bit on Shaw’s situation, though I don’t think he’d be covering at second base in any case. I would expect this makes Vidal Brujan (who can play second base, but also would be the primary back-up in center field, which the Cubs might not otherwise have on the roster) a virtual lock for Opening Day, even though it’s possible Jon Berti makes the start at second in place of Hoerner. This also cracks the door a bit for Gage Workman, a Rule 5 pick who has to make the Opening Day roster or be offered back to the Tigers.
More soon, I expect.
