CUBS vs DODGERS — When the Cubs kick off the regular season in Tokyo just over three weeks from today, they’ll square up against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Thus, it’s fitting that the first matchup of the spring is also against the reigning World Series champs and (probable) 2025 World Series favorites. Might as well gear up fast, eh?

As a heads up, this game is not going to be broadcast on Marquee, but is also not available on MLBN, unless you’re out of market. Here’s a look at the 2025 Cubs/Marquee Spring Training Broadcast Schedule if you’re curious. The first televised game on Marquee is tomorrow, also against the Dodgers.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Vidal Brujan, CF Michael Busch, 1B Moises Ballesteros, DH Kevin Alcantara, RF Nicky Lopez, SS Reese McGuire, C Christian Franklin, LF Gage Workman, 3B James Triantos, 2B

As we discussed earlier today, the Cubs don’t have a whole bunch of regulars in this lineup, with only Michael Busch expected to be an Opening Day starter. That said, there are plenty of interesting storylines to follow – from the top prospects to the bench battles.

Personally, I’m most excited to get a closer look at the bat of Moises Ballesteros (not just today, but all spring) and the outfield work of Kevin Alcantara. Though to that latter point, I was hoping to see Alcantara in center field not right. I understand that he’s unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, while Brujan still has a shot as a backup, but the scouting community has become increasingly bullish on Alcantara’s glovework in center field, so I want to see a little more myself. He remains a very high-ceiling prospect for the Cubs, too often overlooked because he’s second to Matt Shaw overall and second in center field to Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Either way, I suspect Alcantara will get a nice long runway at Triple-A this season, where he can take everyday at-bats and work on cutting down the strikeouts. Once he figures that out though … watch out. He’ll have some helium (and he’s already a top 50 or so prospect).

Los Angeles Dodgers Lineup:

Mookie Betts, SS Max Muncy, 3B Teoscar Hernandez, RF James Outman, CF Eddie Rosario, LF David Bote, 1B Hunter Feduccia, C Hyesong Kim, 2B Dalton Rushing, DH

The Dodgers, by contrast, have a few more regulars in their starting lineup this afternoon, including Mookie Betts, Max Munch, and Teoscar Hernandez. But no Shohei Ohtani and no Freddie Freeman.

Pitching Matchup: Cubs vs Dodgers

Chicago Cubs: Cody Poteet, RHP

Cody Poteet draws the first “start” of the year, though he’s not really a candidate for the starting rotation. Acquired in the Cody Bellinger (salary-dumping) trade with the Yankees, Poteet, 29, has minor-league options remaining. And because the Cubs intend to stretch him out, you can consider Poteet slated to open the season in the Triple-A Iowa rotation.

It’s possible he could wind up contributing out of the big league bullpen, depending on how things shake out, but that’s it for now.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Yoshinobu Yamamoto, RHP

The Dodgers are going with their projected Opening Day starter against the Cubs, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, to open up their spring slate. Yamamoto, 26, broke into the league last year (signing a $325M deal with the Dodgers) to the tune of a 3.00 ERA over 18 starts. We all know him. He’s good. Hopefully, he shows a little too much today, and the Cubs can bank some insights for that first game in Tokyo.
