The facility is being built 10km northwest of the existing port, for which it will act as an overflow. It will contain a 500m-long, 12m-deep dock capable of handling 2,000 shipping containers at one time.
The $290m scheme will also involve the construction of 1.3km of access roads. It was financed by the World Bank and the Export-Import Bank of Korea.
The Department of Transportation and Cebu Port Authority selected South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction to build the port in November 2024.
Jaime Bautista, the Philippines’ transport secretary, said: “The benefits of this project extend far beyond its physical structure. It is expected to generate a wide array of advantages for users, the local community and the public sector.”
The project is due to be completed by the second quarter of 2028.
