It’s not anything too terribly different from what he said earlier in the week, or what the front office said for that matter, but I thought it worth sharing Craig Counsell’s latest comments on the state of the Cubs’ offseason maneuvering.
It’s not quite over as far as Counsell is concerned:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 11, 2025The real key there is not so much Counsell saying you never feel done – that’s always true, what with the waiver wire and smaller moves – but instead is him saying there are still “good opportunities” for the Cubs to add.
Counsell specifically mentions first base as an area, organizationally, that the Cubs could still stand to add, even if it meant just getting someone in the door to get some Spring Training at bats.
His point was broader than just first base, though, and you could almost sense him not wanting to mention anything else specifically. Good opportunities. It isn’t hard to look at the roster, good though it may be, and still see some potential areas where an upgrade is possible: first base back-up, sure, but also impact relievers, middle rotation starter, power bat for the bench, or even a true 4th outfielder type. Then you look at the market, and there are still some solid veterans looking for jobs, some of whom may even have to settle for a non-guaranteed minor league deal – certainly no harm in going that route.
And, you know, there’s always that one big free agent still out there ….
