The park, which is the size of four American football pitches, is located between 4th and 6th streets in the heart of downtown Louisville.
It was opened in 1973, and is now in a state of disrepair. The refurbishment will add a ribbon-like pavilion and pedestrian paths.
The area can be used as a green “living room” for Louisville, hosting cultural events and recreational spaces.
Heatherwick Studio has held three meetings with the Louisville community to shape the project’s design.
Craig Greenberg, Louisville’s mayor, said: “The Belvedere is 50 years old and showing signs of age. Do we continue to let it crack and crumble, or do we do something new, big and bold?”
Work on the project is due to begin in 2026.
