Retirement isn’t on Bryan Cranston’s radar—and thank god for that.
The Breaking Bad star opened up about his future while attending ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan, revealing that he hopes to continue acting and writing for as long as he possibly can.
“For an actor living the life that I am very fortunate to have, I have no intention of stopping, and I think life will stop before I will want it to, and that will be great,” Cranston told PEOPLE in a piece shared Saturday, October 3.
In fact, walking away from his career is difficult for Cranston to even imagine. “It’s like stopping breathing for me. If I stopped acting and writing, what would I do?” he said, adding that while some people look forward to retirement, “I wouldn’t know what to do with it.”
Instead, Cranston hopes to keep experiencing (and creating) as much as possible. Recalling a quote about wanting to be “completely worn out” by the end of one’s life, he explained that he’d like to eventually feel as though he has nothing left to give.
“I did everything—I traveled, I experienced life—and I’m tired and I’m just absolutely done,” he said per the outlet. “I want to be able to be proud of the things that I’ve [accomplished].”
Acting has been part of Cranston’s life since childhood. Both of his parents worked as actors, and he recalled putting on his first play in the family’s garage, with his brother writing and directing the production.

The profession has since continued into another generation. Cranston’s 33-year-old daughter, Taylor Dearden, has earned praise for playing Dr. Melissa “Mel” King on The Pitt.
Cranston previously told PEOPLE in June that he’s been impressed by the subtleties in his daughter’s performance, admitting, “I truly think she is further along in her ability than I ever was at her age.”
That’s quite a difference from Cranston, who after years of smaller television parts and his memorable run as Hal on Malcolm in the Middle, took on Walter White in Breaking Bad at age 52—a performance that absolutely transformed his career.
