The Chicago Cubs have signed another minor league arm, bringing in big righty Brayden Spears from indy ball.
We’d like to give a big congratulations to ‘22-‘24 Hawks RHP Brayden Spears for signing with the Chicago Cubs! This move marks a significant step in Spears’ professional baseball career, and the Boise Hawks community wishes him continued success with the Cubs! pic.twitter.com/9lNTInI1HW
— Boise Hawks (@BoiseHawks) February 10, 2025Spears, 23, is a 6’6″, 235-pound right-handed reliever who spent the last three years pitching for the Boise Hawks in the Pioneer League. His performance got better each year, and I’d imagine it’s hard not to dream on the upside for a guy of his size. Not only that, but managing the grind associated with going three years in indy ball trying to improve and find that first affiliated contract is not easy.
I would also note that a guy of his size, with an unorthodox delivery, might simply take a little longer to develop:

— Boise Hawks (@BoiseHawks) June 12, 2022Definitely worth a chance, eh? Spears figures to get work in minor league spring training, and then a chance in the lower-levels to open the year up. The Cubs will likely reassess from there.
