With the second half of the high school sports winter season well underway, here is a look at the standout local athletes and moments from this past week’s action.

Athletes of the week

Maylin Bernard, Roosevelt girls wrestling

Bernard, a sophomore, won the 100-pound bracket during the Tournament of Knights, hosted by Severance on Saturday. She went 3-0 with three pins, including a pin in 3:48 in the finals.

Claire Brown, Briggsdale girls basketball

Brown, a senior, carried much of the offensive load in the Falcons’ 50-19 road win against Rocky Mountain Lutheran on Friday. She scored 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting to go with five steals.

Bryla Bunting, Platte Valley girls basketball

Bunting, a sophomore, had an impressive double-double in the Broncos’ hard-fought 47-41 home win against rival Eaton on Jan. 6. She had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophia Carbajal, Northridge girls basketball

Carbajal, a junior forward, was electric in a pair of wins against Wellington and Greeley West. In the 63-22 win against Wellington on Jan. 6, she had 39 points on 14-of-21 shooting to go with 14 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks. In a 57-24 victory against Greeley West on Thursday, she had 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting to go with 17 rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Wyatt Chase, Highland boys wrestling

Chase, a senior, was completely dominant while winning the 190-pound bracket during the Mel Smith Invitational on Friday-Saturday in Florence. He went 5-0 with four pins, including a pin in 4:51 in the finals.

Austin Crider, Eaton boys basketball

Crider, a senior, had a big double-double in the Reds’ 71-45 road win against Platte Valley on Jan. 6. He had 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting and made 8 of 10 free throws to go with 11 rebounds and a blocked shot.

Soliana Gebremeskel, Union Colony girls basketball

Gebremeskel, a senior, had a scoring performance to remember in the Timberwolves’ dominant 76-9 3A/2A/1A Mile High League home win against Clear Creek on Thursday. She had a career-high 50 points on 24-of-41 shooting to go with 16 steals and six assists. She’s averaging 30.3 points and 9.7 steals per game this season. Her previous career high was 49 points, set a year ago.

Rocky Hoffschneider, Valley boys wrestling

Hoffschneider, a sophomore, won the 165-pound bracket during the Mel Smith Invitational on Friday-Saturday in Florence. He went 5-0 in the tournament, including a 7-1 win in the finals. His previous four wins in the tournament were all via pin.

Kyla Lin Hollier, Roosevelt girls basketball

Hollier, a senior, was unstoppable in the Rough Riders’ 63-42 home win against Greeley Central on Jan. 6. She had 34 points on 15-of-28 shooting to go with 13 rebounds and four steals.

Samuel Stockton, Resurrection Christian boys wrestling

Stockton, a senior, remained undefeated on the season (15-0) and topped the 285-pound bracket during the Mel Smith Invitational on Friday-Saturday in Florence. He went 5-0, including four first-period pins and an 8-0 win in the finals.

Abrianna Torrez, Greeley West girls wrestling

Torrez, a senior, was lights out as she went 2-0 and won the 235-pound bracket of the Tournament of Knights on Saturday in Severance. She had two pins, including a pin in 2:30 in the finals.

Tyler Varra, Highland boys wrestling

Varra, a senior, won the 150-pound bracket during the Mel Smith Invitational on Friday-Saturday in Florence. He went 5-0, including a victory via a 21-9 major decision in the finals.

Audrey Wakkinen, Severance girls wrestling

Wakkinen, a freshman, won the 135-pound bracket of the Silver Knights’ home tournament, the Tournament of Knights on Saturday. She went 3-0 and picked up a pin in 3:42 in the finals. In fact, she pinned all three of her opponents.

Moment of the week

Greeley Central used a huge fourth-quarter rally to force overtime in a 5A/4A Longs Peak League boys basketball game on Jan. 6 in Johnstown. However, the Rough Riders composed themselves to secure a 75-70 win. Roosevelt led 53-36 after a big third quarter, but the Wildcats outscored the Rough Riders 27-10 in the fourth. Roosevelt outscored Central 12-7 in the overtime period. Senior Brooks Reckard led a balanced Rough Riders squad with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists.
