A NEW tiny home community is giving a few seniors a chance at free housing.
Life without rent or a mortgage may sound like a dream — but most don’t qualify for this opportunity.

LOT LIFE
The settlement, called “In Our Backyard” is taking shape in the parking lot of Central Lutheran Church in Anchorage, Alaska.
It’s a non-profit organization founded in 2023 that has quickly turned its idea into reality.
Funded by donations, the group is building six tiny homes and one trailer-style bathroom facility.
Space will be given to local elderly people experiencing homelessness.
The group’s volunteers and case managers will help residents transition to more stable housing, their website says.
Volunteers told Alaska News Source that the facility could help keep homeless camps from forming in the neighborhood.
REQUIREMENTS
As spots are limited, there are some requirements for those looking to apply.
Residents will be ages 50 and over, and can be single or couples.
Residents must be able to live independently and cannot be registered sex offenders. They also must not smoke marijuana, drink alcohol, or use ilicit substances on the property.
Two of the shelters are 96 square feet, with four of them taking up just 64 square feet.
But in the cold Alaskan winter, it could be a life-saving shelter.
There is a monetary catch, however. Residents will pay a small monthly fee that will be returned to them once they manage to find more permanent housing.
More details are available on In Our Backyard’s website.
