Cubs Roster Move: Zastryzny DFA’d to Make Room for Brasier ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Cubs and Dodgers have made the Ryan Brasier trade official, with the Cubs getting Brasier and some cash (he was set to make $4.5 million this year, not clear yet how much the Cubs are paying), and the Dodgers getting a Player to Be Named Later or cash.

To make room on the 40-man roster for the new reliever, the Cubs designated Rob Zastryzny for assignment. The 32-year-old lefty was a Cubs waiver claim at the start of the offseason, and figured to compete for a lefty job in the bullpen. Right now, only Caleb Thielbar projects to be a sure-thing member of the bullpen, with Luke Little potentially being an up-down guy.

The Cubs are extremely righty-heavy in the reliever group – both the expected Opening Day guys, and the depth guys – but Zastryzny doesn’t have minor league options remaining. So if he wasn’t going to make the Opening Day bullpen, then he was going to have to hit waivers at some point anyway. Hopefully he clears waivers and decides to accept an outright to Triple-A Iowa (or signs a new minor league deal with the Cubs). You definitely do want to keep Zastryzny in the organization as lefty depth, all else equal.
