Colorado State’s three-game Mountain West Conference winning streak came to an end late Tuesday night at San Diego State with a 75-60 loss to the Aztecs.
Despite the Rams playing a close game with the Aztecs for much of the first half, San Diego State began to pull away just before halftime and spent the second half extending its lead while forcing CSU to turn the ball over 20 times. That included 13 in the final 20 minutes
CSU dropped to 10-7 overall and 4-2 in the Mountain West.
“Can’t turn the ball over 20 times against anybody, let alone San Diego State here in this place, and give yourself a chance,” CSU head coach Niko Medved said.
The Rams led 11-6 early, scoring their first nine points on a pair of 3-pointers by Jalen Lake and another by Jaylen Crocker-Johnson. San Diego State then scored the next eight points to go ahead 14-11.
Nique Clifford then scored five straight points to give the Rams back the lead at 16-14, but the Aztecs answered with a 6-0 run and never relinquished the lead.
CSU got within 32-29 late in the first half, but Clifford missed the free throw on an and-1 play and San Diego State made a 3-pointer with four seconds left before halftime to take a 35-29 lead into the break.
After the Aztecs went ahead 43-31 early in the second half, CSU never got closer than 10. The Rams trailed by as many as 20 at one point in the second half.
Lake led the Rams with 15 points. Kyan Evans added 14 while Clifford and Rashaan Mbemba each had 11. The Rams only got two points from their bench, far fewer than it had during its three-game winning streak.
“It hurt us tonight. We didn’t really get anything off the bench on either end of the floor,” Medved said. “You know, the bench has been good for us this year. Tonight, not so much.”
CSU will be back in action Saturday when it travels north across the border to face Wyoming at 2 p.m.
