The holiday season ends in a big way this week, as numerous local government boards return to session with significant agenda items – including preliminary budget discussions and wish lists for the General Assembly. The Chapel Hill Town Council will also tackle two major development proposals, one for apartments on Elliott Road and one for townhomes along South 15/501. But the highest-profile agenda item of the week may be in Carrboro, where the Town Council will begin discussing the possibility of turning East Weaver Street into a pedestrian-only downtown plaza.

Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.

Orange County

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, January 13. Tops on the agenda is an extremely local item: a resident on West Queen Street complained to the town that his neighbor is creating a nuisance by feeding and attracting turkey vultures. In addition, commissioners will identify their top 10 goals for the General Assembly in its upcoming legislative session. Click here for the full agenda.

The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, with only one agenda item – but it’s a big one. Council members will hold a work session on “reimagining Weaver Street,” considering options for reducing or eliminating vehicles on East Weaver Street downtown – potentially turning that block into a pedestrian mall. Tuesday’s meeting is only the beginning of a longer discussion; get the full agenda at this link.

The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 15. Council members will hear a concept plan for Flint Knoll, a proposed development of 160 townhomes on 15/501 South; they’ll also open a hearing for the proposed Aura South Elliott development, which would build a 5-6 story apartment building on South Elliott Road with about 330 units. Get the full agenda here.

The Orange County School Board meets at 6 p.m. Monday, January 13. Click here for the full agenda, which includes mid-year data on school attendance and student discipline, plus a look at possible changes to next year’s academic calendar.

And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 16. Their agenda includes a report from the Public School Foundation, a preliminary overview of next year’s budget needs, and a vote on school improvement plans for the next two years. Get the full agenda at this link.

Chatham and Durham Counties

The Pittsboro Board of Commissioners meets at 6 p.m. Monday, January 13. Board members will get the results of last year’s financial audit, consider a proposal to modify development plans at Powell Place, and set their goals for the General Assembly’s upcoming legislative session. Get the full agenda here.

The Chatham County School Board meets twice this week: first at 6 p.m. Monday, January 13, with an agenda that includes a preliminary budget discussion, followed by a mid-year board retreat at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday the 14th. Click here for Monday’s agenda.

Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, January 13, with a light agenda that includes a resolution recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Get the full agenda at this link.
