Boston Celtics secured a decisive victory over the Dallas Mavericks in Game 5 of their playoff series, winning with a final score of 106-88. This victory showcased the Celtics' dominance on both ends of the court, as they outplayed the Mavericks in nearly every aspect of the game.
One key factor in the Celtics' success was their strong defensive performance. They were able to hold the Mavericks to just 88 points, well below their season average. The Celtics' defense was suffocating, forcing turnovers and contesting shots at every opportunity.
Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 31 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds. Jaylen Brown — named NBA Finals MVP — added 21 points and 8 rebounds. 
Bill Russell would be so proud,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said of Brown before handing him the trophy named after the late Celtics great.
Luka Doncic led the Mavericks in defeat with 28 points and 12 rebounds.
Boston never trailed and led by as many as 26 feeding off the energy of the Garden crowd.
Dallas was within 16-15 early before the Celtics closed the first quarter on a 12-3 run that included eight combined points by Tatum and Brown.
Mavericks trimmed what had been a 15-point deficit to nine. Boston ended the period with a 19-7 spurt that was capped by a a half-court buzzer beater by Payton Pritchard – his second such shot of the series – to give Boston a 67-46 halftime lead.
After losing in the Finals to the Golden State Warriors in 2022 and being upset in the Eastern Conference Finals by the Miami Heat last year, the Celtics made a couple of big swings last offseason to construct a fearsome five-man unit.
Multiple-time All-Stars Holiday and Kristaps Porziņģis (formerly a Maverick) were acquired via trade, with the latter’s recent return from injury proving to be a big boost for Boston.
The pair are accompanied by overqualified role-player Derrick White, but it was Tatum and Brown who were the true difference makers.
Tatum told the ABC broadcast following the championship win that the Celtics stayed focused despite mounting pressure going into Game 5.
