Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll. The couple, who tied the knot in 2017, seemed to have a picture-perfect marriage, often seen supporting each other at various events and sharing glimpses of their life together on social media.
Speculations about trouble in paradise began circulating when McIlroy was spotted without his wedding ring at recent tournaments. The news of their impending divorce has left fans and followers stunned and saddened.
In a statement to Golfweek, McIlroy’s team stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible and noted he will not be making any further comment. TMZ was first to report the news.
“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed," McIlroy’s representatives told the Telegraph Sport. "They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.”

The divorce was filed a day after McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship. He is scheduled to speak to the media at Valhalla on Wednesday ahead of the PGA Championship.
McIlroy did arrive to Valhalla on Tuesday afternoon and was seen warming up onIn the court filing, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, McIlroy's attorneys wrote that the marriage is irretrievably broken. They asked for shared parental custody of their daughter and for a judge to enforce a prenuptial agreement the couple signed on March 7, 2017.
A reason for the divorce wasn't immediately known. The petition for dissolution of marriage was filed confidentially.

He resigned from the PGA Tour board last November, then was involved in a plan to rejoin the board by replacing Webb Simpson. That move was met by resistance from other player directors. Instead, McIlroy was appointed to a committee that is negotiating with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia over potentially becoming a minority investor.
