Max Verstappen has finally lifted the lid on one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding his Formula 1 future, confirming that his decision to remain with Red Bull came only after serious conversations with both Mercedes and McLaren.
For months, the Dutchman’s long-term allegiance had been one of the sport’s dominant storylines, with Mercedes in particular repeatedly linked with a move for the four-time world champion.
Red Bull’s struggles during the 2026 campaign only intensified the intrigue, raising the possibility that Verstappen could finally decide the time had come to leave the team with which he had built his career.
Instead, the four-time world champion committed his future to the Milton Keynes-based outfit until at least the end of 2030, with the new agreement announced ahead of his home race at Zandvoort.
Now, in an interview with BBC Sport, Verstappen has revealed that the speculation was not merely paddock noise. Conversations with rival teams really did take place.
Verstappen confirms rival approaches
The 28-year-old stopped short of portraying the discussions as a dramatic transfer saga, insisting that he treated every conversation with the “seriousness” it deserved before ultimately deciding that Red Bull remained where he wanted to be.
"Of course, any kind of chat you take seriously. They're all very respectful chats. There's nothing wrong with that,” Verstappen said in an interview with the BBC.
"I felt that staying was, for me, the right choice. You have to follow your heart. I could have run away very early on in my Red Bull career and gone somewhere else to try and win.
“If you have a little bit of patience, you do end up winning. I feel like that's my approach now as well.”
The comments provide the clearest confirmation yet that Mercedes and McLaren were more than hypothetical destinations during the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Yet Verstappen ultimately chose continuity over the potentially tempting prospect of jumping into another competitive project. That decision carries added significance given that he has yet to win a race for Red Bull during a difficult 2026 season.
Rather than allowing the team's current struggles to dictate his thinking, Verstappen says he encouraged Red Bull to concentrate on solving its performance problems rather than worrying about whether he would stay.
"I always said to them: 'Don't stress about it, just work on the car.' Because the faster the car goes, the easier the decision is anyway,” he added.
"I can understand, of course, maybe sometimes they were a little bit worried. But at the same time, for me, I was just worried about here, what was going on.
"At the same time, I was very busy with my stuff also outside of Formula 1. So I never really spent a lot of time talking or doing different things or trying to go somewhere else."
‘You cannot be the captain of the ship’
There is also a clear philosophy behind Verstappen’s decision.
After dominating the championship with Red Bull in recent seasons, the Dutchman has suddenly found himself in the unfamiliar position of trying to drag a struggling package back towards the front.
For some, that would be the moment to seek refuge in a rival team. Not Verstappen.
He insists that proving he can win in another car has never been the motivation behind his career decisions, even when an alternative might offer a quicker route back to the front.
"I don't mind the challenge also. I don't have that desire or need to show in another car that I can win it, or whatever,” he said.
"It's easy to run to the fastest car and then do it all again. But it's not how I am. You cannot be the captain of the ship and as soon as there is something not working, you jump off the ship.
"It's been a bit downwards from the dominant years, but I don't mind also rebuilding it. It's another challenge as well."

The conversations with Mercedes and McLaren were real, the alternatives were evidently serious enough to warrant consideration, but when the moment came to choose, Verstappen opted not to abandon the Red Bull project at its lowest ebb.
Instead, he has effectively placed a very public bet on the team rebuilding around him – and given himself until 2030 to find out whether that gamble pays off.
