Latest on MLB's No. 1 free agent, Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani is a free agent.

Far and away the best player available this winter, the longtime Los Angeles Angels two-way star is expected to command more than half a billion dollars. And that's despite undergoing a second UCL surgery and being unavailable to pitch for the 2024 season.

Who is going to land this once-in-a generation talent? Here's everything we know -- from just how great Ohtani is and how much he could make, to his top suitors and, of course, all the latest news and buzz.

Unsurprisingly, the Dodgers were the overwhelming choice among executives: 10 of the 14 decision-makers who participated said they believe the Angels superstar will wind up heading 30 miles north on the I-5.

Dodgers have an infatuation with a guy and they’ve made moves that seem like they do, they always get their guy. I would be surprised if that's not where he ends up.”

Los Angeles’ chances of signing the three-time All-Star, simply declining to give an answer based on the unprecedented nature of his free agency – especially after his recent Tommy John surgery will prevent him from pitching in 2024.

That, perhaps, puts Ohtani in the Cubs’ radar. It certainly would be a bold move to sign him when he won’t pitch until 2025 and thus would serve strictly as a DH in 2024. Even that is worth tremendous value. Ohtani hit .304/.412/.654 with 44 home runs in 2023, leading the A.L. in home runs and SLG, and leading the major leagues in OPS. This was accomplished in just 135 games, as Ohtani was shut down after an oblique injury and elbow surgery in mid-September. The offensive performance was worth 6.0 bWAR, which ranked fourth in the A.L. among position players.

MLB Trade Rumors says Ohtani will get a 12-year deal for $528 million, which would be an AAV of $44 million, the richest contract in MLB history both in per-year and total dollar amount.

There will be more teams that will try for Ohtani. I think as many as 10 will at least put forth an effort to sign him. But I think these three will be on his shortlist, and some others might be as well depending on how this offseason plays out.
