Tourism is rebounding in Japan and department stores are reaping the rewards. The Japan Department Stores Association says tourists spent 31.7 billion yen, or about 210 million dollars, on duty-free goods in August. That’s 3.4 times more than in the same month last year, and 24 percent up from August 2019, before the pandemic hit. Officials with the association say there’s still room for the sales to grow. China only lifted its ban on group tours mid-way through the month. Before the pandemic, 30 percent of inbound holidaymakers were Chinese.
