Part of what makes Texas’s new abortion law particularly vile is its disregard for women’s reproductive privacy. The law, known as Senate Bill 8, bans all but a few abortions after six weeks’ gestation, a period so short that many women will not even know they are pregnant. But the law also introduces a new and diabolical way to punish those who help (“aid and abet”) women to abort after six weeks. Under the statute, nothing happens directly to the pregnant woman herself — but any person (apparently in any state) can sue anyone who helps the pregnant woman get an abortion and can recover $10,000 from that person as a civil fine, or in terms from the old west, a bounty.
