Across the country, a record number of families will be in mourning today as they remember children, siblings, parents and loved ones lost to a drug overdose. In 2020 alone, overdoses killed more than 93,000 people, a 30% increase from 2019 and the highest death toll ever recorded. Yet aside from the welcome movement to legalize marijuana, our elected leaders continue to do nothing but exacerbate the overdose crisis with punitive drug policies based on an outdated 1970s war on drugs “arrest everyone” mentality versus investing in the health services our communities need.
