Sherard Cowper-Coles is the group head of public affairs at HSBC and chair of the China Britain Business Council.Cowper-Coles was a diplomat with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) for 30 years, where he was mostly posted in Muslim-majority countries. In 1994, he was appointed head of the FCO’s Hong Kong Department, and worked on the negotiations for the handover of Hong Kong from British colonial rule back to Chinese sovereignty in 1997.
