Institution of Engineers India (IEI) Qatar Chapter recently conducted a technical webinar session on ‘Future Power Network (Smart Grid) – Challenges and Trends”. The session was attended by around 100 engineers via Zoom. Dr Mohamed Abdulla E al-Hitmi, head of Electrical Engineering Department, Qatar University, was the chief guest. Dr al-Hitmi, associate professor, explained that the traditional electricity grids had almost no storage capabilities. They are demand driven and have a hierarchical structure. A smart grid is an electricity network enabling a two-way flow of electricity and data whereby smart metering is often seen as a first step towards and future possibilities for electric
