The Phillips Family Farm in Smith County dates back to 1920. James “Jim” Phillips and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Smith Phillips, had five children before she died in childbirth in 1906. Jim and his second wife, Ella Chambers Phillips, had seven children. On the 336-acre farm, the family grew tobacco, corn, and hay and raised cattle, mules, and chickens. In 1937, son Sherman Phillips became the farm’s next owner. He added rye and sheep to the farm and in some years sheared as many as 225 sheep.
