Crabgrass is a weed to horticulturalists but a blessing to livestock producers, while there are plants these same livestock producers consider weeds that are used and even loved by those same horticulturalists. Buckhorn plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.), I found out not long ago, is in the latter category. After years of fighting it in hayfields and fielding calls from farmers doing the same, I mentioned it as a weed at a Master Gardener class.
