Bob Dylan fans have a massive new collection of music to explore, with hundreds of previously unreleased recordings from one of the most celebrated periods of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s career.
On Friday, Nov. 6, Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings released The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings, an enormous 39-CD collection containing 381 tracks, including a staggering 371 that have never been released before.
The collection revisits the second leg of Dylan’s legendary Rolling Thunder Revue tour, capturing performances from the spring of 1976 that have remained largely unheard for half a century.
A separate three-LP collection featuring Dylan’s complete May 16, 1976, concert in Fort Worth, Texas, is also being released Friday.
What’s Included in Bob Dylan’s Massive New Collection?
The Rolling Thunder Revue: The 1976 Live Recordings documents the second leg of Dylan’s ambitious 1975–1976 concert tour, which brought together an extraordinary collection of musicians for a series of unconventional performances.
The 1976 leg began April 18 in Lakeland, Florida, and concluded May 25 in Salt Lake City, Utah, after 27 dates. Nearly all of those performances are represented in the new collection.
Dylan was joined by several musicians who had appeared on his chart-topping 1976 album Desire, including bassist Rob Stoner, violinist Scarlet Rivera and drummer Howie Wyeth.
The touring ensemble also featured Mick Ronson, Steven Soles, David Mansfield and T Bone Burnett, while longtime collaborator Joan Baez reunited with Dylan for duets on songs including “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Railroad Boy.”
The collection spans some of Dylan’s most recognizable recordings, including “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Maggie’s Farm,” “Lay, Lady, Lay,” “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” “Tangled Up in Blue” and “Shelter from the Storm.”
But the appeal goes beyond the familiar songs. With 371 previously unreleased tracks, the set offers an unusually extensive look at how Dylan and his fellow musicians approached the same material across different performances.

T Bone Burnett Calls the ‘Rolling Thunder Revue’ ‘the First National Punk Rock Tour’
Burnett, who participated in the original tour, makes a striking argument about its place in music history in material accompanying the new release.
“The Rolling Thunder Revue was the first national punk rock tour,” Burnett recalls, connecting the performances’ unpredictable energy to the musical revolution that followed. He argues that the tour helped pave the way for artists including the Clash, Elvis Costello, the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, who would soon reshape rock music.
The collection also includes the complete May 23, 1976, concert recording from Fort Collins, Colorado, which provided material for Dylan’s Hard Rain television special.
In the new box set’s liner notes, music journalist Mikal Gilmore singles out Dylan’s explosive performance of “Idiot Wind” from the special as “among the most rageful and brilliant performances Dylan ever committed before camera.”
Bob Dylan’s Fort Worth Concert Is Also Getting a Separate Release
Fans who aren’t ready to tackle 39 CDs have another option arriving Nov. 6.
A three-LP collection features Dylan’s complete May 16, 1976, performance in Fort Worth, Texas, with all 22 tracks newly remixed from the original multitrack recordings. A live rendition of “Going, Going, Gone” from that concert was released in September to preview the project. The larger box set also includes a booklet featuring Gilmore’s liner notes and rare photographs documenting the tour.
For Dylan, now 85, the collection adds another chapter to a career that has already produced decades of influential recordings, countless accolades and a 1988 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
And for fans who thought they’d heard everything from his legendary Rolling Thunder Revue, the arrival of 371 previously unreleased tracks suggests there’s still plenty left to discover.
