Is this really the next “Essential” solar powered camera to hit the market?

One of the biggest annoyances with battery-powered security cameras is having to take them down every so often to recharge them. Arlo has always had a nice solution by having some of their models with removable batteries and a charging station, but with that you still have to take the camera down, swap out the battery, and then have to have a place in your home where you keep these plugged in at all times. Well they have found a smarter way to solve an ongoing problem. With the Essential Solar Security Camera, combining a rechargeable battery with built-in solar charging to help keep itself powered, no mess, no cords, no problems.

Design & Installation.

One of the things I like about the Essential Solar Camera is its small, clean design. It doesn’t have the oversized look that some outdoor security cameras have when paired with a solar panel.

The mounting options are another nice touch. Arlo gives you three mounting positions on the back of the camera, giving you that extra flexibility when trying to get the right angle. Sometimes the difference between a useful camera view and one that’s constantly missing something comes down to a few degrees. Having those extra mounting positions makes it easier to get the camera pointed where you actually need it, and helps you get that perfect angle for maximum sun.

Installation is completely wireless, so there is no need to run a power cable to the mounting location,no more restrictions to where it’s placed giving you more options for mounting. You’ll still want to make sure you have a good Wi-Fi signal and enough direct sunlight where you plan to install it, but not having to rely on power makes placement much easier, and who doesn’t love an easy mounting!

    Solar Charging & Battery Life.

This is easily one of the biggest selling points of the Essential Solar Camera. The built-in solar panel has a large 14,790 mAh rechargeable battery tucked away behind the scenes helping keep the camera powered when the sun goes down.

Arlo advertises that just two hours of direct sunlight per day can keep the camera running. It also claims that a fully charged battery can last up to six months without sunlight. That’s a pretty impressive amount of time for a “back up battery”.

The real appeal here is not having to think about charging nearly as often. Once the camera is mounted in a good location, the solar panel pretty much does all of the work. That is exactly what I want from an outdoor security camera, I just want it to work,  I don’t want to have to think about it.

    Camera Features & Video.

The Essential Solar Camera offers 2K video with a 130-degree field of view, giving you a fairly wide area to monitor. It also includes color night vision, motion detection, and a built-in LED spotlight.

There is also a 12x digital zoom, which can be useful when you want to take a closer look at something. Comes in handy with seeing what kid was leaving the gate open in the back yard haha.

For nighttime monitoring, the color night vision and spotlight give you another way to see what’s going on night and day. One thing I did when I set mine up was to enable the spot light to come on when motion is detected, at night I found that with the spot light on it definitely helps improve the ability to see someone’s face that maybe shouldn’t be in your space. The camera also includes a built-in siren, which can be triggered through the app when you want to discourage unwanted activity. You can always use the two-way audio as well, allowing you to listen and talk through the camera. Whether you’re checking on someone at the door or trying to communicate with someone outside, it can certainly be a useful or fun feature.

    The Arlo Ecosystem.

The Arlo Secure app brings everything together, making it easier to keep an eye on multiple locations from one place. You can view the live feed, receive motion notifications, and manage your camera settings without having to jump between different apps.

The camera also supports dual-band Wi-Fi, so it can connect over either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. A SmartHub isn’t required, which is nice if you just want a single camera, or working your way up to a full set, buying one at a time.

One thing worth mentioning is the subscription situation. The camera will still provide motion notifications and live video without a paid subscription. However, features such as cloud video storage, interactive notifications, and some of the more advanced detection features require an Arlo Secure plan. Arlo includes a one-month trial, so you can try those additional features before deciding whether you want to continue with a subscription.

    Price.

The Arlo Essential Solar Camera is at a listed price of $99.99 but often has sales and promotions. Arlo Essential 2K Solar Security Camera and its the same price on amazon if you prefer to shop there.

I’ll add this to the price section, but you have the option to use the cameras on a free basic plan, giving you little to no features but if all you want is a camera to look at from time to time then maybe it’s not such a bad thing. Now if you want something that is going to tell you who is at your door, or if you have a package waiting for you, and keep much longer footage then maybe you might want to explore those subscriptions.

There are three types of Security Plans.

The first one is the Smart Aware, with the option of a per camera or an unlimited plan, the per camera is $9.99 a month while the Unlimited cameras is $20.00 a month. In the Smart Aware you get.

The second one is the Smart Secure, for unlimited cameras at $29.99 a month and with that you’ll get everything the smart aware has to offer with the added bonus of Emergency Response.

Threat Assessment. 24/7 Professional Monitoring. 24/7 Emergency Response. Arlo Safe Plan. Home Insurance Discount.

The third is the Ultra Secure, at $49.99 and unlimited cameras you’ll get everything the first two have to offer with the added bonus of 24/7 continuous video recording on up to three cameras.

    Final Thoughts.

Overall, the Arlo Essential Solar Security Camera has been a great addition to my growing Arlo lineup. It combines the compact designer love, with flexible mounting options, and a large battery with that extra convenience of that built-in solar charging.

It’s not completely maintenance-free, since placement, sunlight, Wi-Fi, and occasional battery checks still matter. And you’ll want to consider the subscription if you plan on using cloud recordings and the more advanced smart features, I personally think it’s worth it! But if you’re looking for a compact outdoor camera with good flexibility and a virtually never ending battery, the Arlo Essential Solar Security Camera is an easy one for me to recommend.

At the end of the day what makes me always come back to Arlo for my home security isn’t just for the new and innovative cameras, but a network that always seems to work. I’m so sick of my cameras being offline or disconnected when I need them the most.

If you’re looking for a camera that needs virtually zero maintenance and never leaves you hanging then maybe it’s time to give Arlo a try. Thank you guys for reading and I hope I was able to help you on choosing your next home security camera!
