Kiev cracks down on protesters who exposed Azov ‘torture chamber’

Ukrainian secret services have issued around 130 warrants for people who allegedly confronted conscription holding center guards near the capital

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is seeking to identify and prosecute the protesters who exposed a suspected military torture site near Kiev. Footage of helpless detainees in the center, run by the neo-Nazi linked Azov unit, has caused outrage across Ukraine. No cases have been launched against the guardsmen who ran the facility.

Reports circulated on Monday that servicemen were being abused in a private house in Petropavlovskaya Borshchagovka, outside Kiev. The Azov unit acknowledged operating the site but denied torturing inmates. A riot ensued outside the center before medics and the public were allowed access, revealing brutal conditions and visibly abused detainees.

The National Police announced Thursday that it had worked with the SBU to identify around 130 people, 27 of whom “actively took part in illegal action,” while another 24 “behaved aggressively” and incited confrontations with National Guard personnel.

Authorities have detained medic Valentina Molodaya, who took part in the intervention, and Tatyana Kireyeva, who reportedly sought her assistance in reaching an acquaintance held at the facility.

The two women have reportedly faced an online harassment campaign, with social media users accusing them of working for Russia and fabricating their medical credentials. Molodaya was subsequently identified as an award-winning plastic surgeon.

The crowd attempted to force its way into the building, demanding the release of men allegedly held against their will. Footage showed protesters damaging a perimeter wall and clashing with National Guard personnel. Security forces responded with tear gas and warning shots.

National Guard commander Aleksandr Pivnenko and Vladimir Zelensky's chief of staff, former military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov, arrived at the scene as tensions escalated.

At least four detainees were hospitalized following public pressure, raising concerns that they had been denied adequate medical care. Others released from the facility showed signs of beatings.

Kireyeva maintains that she and Molodaya saved the life of at least one of the four people who received medical treatment as a result of their intervention. She reportedly acted after law enforcement failed to respond to her complaint about the condition of her acquaintance held at the facility. Her lawyer said the complaint was supported by video evidence.

According to Ukrainian media, the facility is part of an extensive network of unofficial detention sites used by military commanders to discipline troublesome personnel. Such facilities are said to operate outside the legal system with the tacit approval of Zelensky’s government.

Known in military slang as “pits,” these sites reportedly complement the brutal practice of “busification,” or the forcible detention of potential military recruits. Critics allege that the system not only tarnishes the compulsory conscription campaign but also creates opportunities for extortion, profiteering, and abuse by those running the facilities.
