In Alabama’s first win under head coach Pauline Love, pace was a point of emphasis from the beginning. The team came into the game ready to play fast, a goal made clear by Love this season.
“We want to score in the first seven seconds of the shot clock,” Love said during the offseason.
If there were any first-game jitters, it wasn’t clear in the first game of the Pauline Love era. The team immediately started out dictating how the game would be played. With this style of play, there’s a need for players to be willing to make the effort needed.
A key part of the fast pace Alabama held throughout the game was rebounding. The Crimson Tide outrebounded Queens 54-37 and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds.
A benefit to the fast style Love brings is the way the ball moves around the court. Alabama had 23 assists, and each player who played 16 or more minutes had at least one assist. Each time the team grabbed a rebound, players ran down the court to create advantages in numbers.
One player who exemplified how Love wants to play was Kylie Torrence, the 6-foot-2 sophomore transfer from Cincinnati. As soon as Torrence entered the game, she immediately ran to grab a rebound off a missed shot and put back another shot in which she was fouled.
At Cincinnati, she led the team in rebounds and blocks that season, which are two key factors that help bring the fast pace to the game that Love wants to see. The versatility Torrence offers to rebound at a high rate, as well as play suffocating defense, will make her a key addition that Love landed from the transfer portal.
“Watching the tape on Kylie, we were really excited to have the opportunity to land her. The way she crashes the boards and plays with energy the whole game is something you can’t miss,” Love said.
With fast pace also comes the chance of turnovers, as players can force passes in an attempt to push the ball out faster. However, Love is well aware of this.
“While we want to get the ball shot within the first seven seconds, 12 at the most, we also understand the importance of communication and being on the same page with one another,” Love said postgame.
Alabama faces New Orleans Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT, with the Love era off to a fast start.
