Donald Trump Says He’ll Accept Midterm Election Results as Republicans Face Losses: ‘Would’ve Won If I Was on the Ballot’

President Donald Trump has broken his silence on the 2026 Midterm Election results and noted that he’s fully prepared to accept the outcome of the election and to work with Democrats, as they take control of Congress.

The comments from the US President come after he had previously said he would respect the outcome only if the elections were “honest.” However, on Tuesday night, as Republicans faced losses in key races, he said he would accept the results and could work with Democrats if they gained power.

“I am absolutely willing to accept those results. We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out,” Trump told The New York Times while watching the results.

Meanwhile, the President shared similar feelings on Truth Social and noted that the Republicans would have won if he was on the ballot.

The President also sought to distance himself from the Republican performance, arguing that the outcome was affected by his not being on the ballot. He had spent weeks campaigning for GOP candidates in competitive states to protect the party’s narrow congressional majorities.

Early results showed Democrats flipping Senate seats in North Carolina and South Carolina, while Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff held his seat in Georgia. Democrat Chris Pappas also won in New Hampshire. In South Carolina, Annie Andrews’ victory marked the state’s first Democratic Senate win in more than two decades.

Democrats also won gubernatorial races. Amy Acton defeated Trump-backed Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio, while Keisha Lance Bottoms won in Georgia, becoming the first Black woman elected governor there. Deb Haaland won New Mexico’s governor’s race.

Voters’ concerns about the economy and cost of living appeared to weigh on Republicans. Exit polling found widespread dissatisfaction with the country’s direction, with many voters blaming the administration for high prices.

Democrats are projected to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a major setback to President Donald Trump and his administration.

The projected victory would give Democrats greater power to challenge Trump’s policies and investigate his administration during the final two years of his presidency. Republican control of the House had allowed Trump to advance much of his legislative agenda with limited opposition.

The shift is expected to take effect on January 3, 2027, when the new Congress convenes. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries could become the first Black Speaker of the House, marking another historic development for the party.
