Child dies after getting measles in Lewis County, latest on local measles cases

LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. — For the first time in more than 30 years, a child in New York State has died from complications of measles.

The child died in Lewis County in the North Country, according to the state’s Department of Health, but officials haven’t shared any more details. Lewis County has seen 15 confirmed cases of measles so far this year, according to the state’s measles dashboard.

The announcement comes four weeks after Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a measles disaster emergency. News10NBC has spoken with local medical providers about the declaration, which allows paramedics and EMTs to administer measles vaccines. Officials say getting vaccinated is the best protection against measles.

    Breakdown of local measles cases

The Department of Health’s measles dashboard lists the number of confirmed measles cases across each county in the state since January. Here are the numbers for local counties as of Oct. 31:

Monroe County: None Wayne County: Nine Ontario County: Seven Seneca County: 48 Yates County: Three Steuben County: 20 Livingston County: None Orleans County: None Genesee County: None

Although there are no confirmed cases in Monroe County, health officials confirmed last month that three children were being treated for measles at Golisano Children’s Hospital. In addition, a person with measles visited Strong Memorial Hospital’s emergency department in September.

    Symptoms of measles

Measles symptoms usually appear 10 to 12 days after exposure but may take as long as 21 days.Symptoms typically appear in two stages. The first stage includes a runny nose, cough, and a slight fever. In addition, eyes may become reddened, and small bluish-white spots, surrounded by a red area, may appear in the mouth.

The second stage includes a red, blotchy rash lasting five to six days. The rash usually begins on the face and then spreads downward and outward, reaching the hands and feet. If you have measles symptoms, call your doctor before going to a clinic, so they can prevent you from exposing others.

“The best way that the community can protect itself is by vaccination,” said Monroe County Health Commissioner Dr. Marielena Velez De Brown. “One MMR vaccine is calculated to be 93% effective in preventing a person from developing measles if they have been exposed. And then the combination of two valid MMR vaccines is up to 97% effective.”

    Measles vaccine recommendations

Velez De Brown shared these vaccine guidelines to protect you or your children from measles:

First dose: Given at 12 to 15 months of age. (Dr. Velez de Brown suggests parents with children older than 6 months talk with their pediatrician about getting an early first dose) Second dose: Given at 4 to 6 years of age but can be given earlier if at least 28 days have passed since the first dose.

    Vaccine information for adults:

All adults born later than 1957 should have at least 1 documented dose of the MMR vaccine.

If you received the vaccine between 1963 and 1967, doctors suggest you get revaccinated with at least one dose of the live MMR vaccine.
