ROCHESTER, N.Y. — CJ Piatt, a Brockport middle school student, is being honored for helping to save a classmate who was choking during lunch at school.
Last January, CJ noticed another student choking and immediately jumped into action, performing the Heimlich maneuver. He was able to dislodge a piece of food and help his classmate breathe again.
His teacher says CJ stayed calm and didn’t hesitate to help. He also received a Brockport’s Best Award for his courage, quick thinking, and leadership.
“I was in the cafeteria and my friend, he went up to the lunch lady and asked for help, pointing at his neck,” CJ said. “So I asked if he was choking and he said yes. So I did the Heimlich maneuver. I usually look on the walls, and it would show papers on how to do the Heimlich maneuver to save lives.”
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here. See past winners here.
