Two weeks ago, Rawlings announced all of their Gold Glove nominees for the 2026 MLB season, and five members of the Chicago Cubs were recognized: Pete Crow-Armstrong (center field), Ian Happ (left field), Seiya Suzuki (right field), Dansby Swanson (shortstop), and Alex Bregman (third base).
Neither Nico Hoerner nor Michael Busch was nominated, but both were very strong defensively this season, as the entire Cubs defense (as a unit) ranked as one of the best in baseball in a looooong time. The Cubs were truly elite defensively this past year. I think we all know that. Tonight, Rawlings has announced the winners, and two of those five took home an award.
Obviously, Pete Crow-Armstrong was one of the chosen. If you didn’t see that one coming, you must not have watched many games this year. He wasn’t just the best defensive center fielder in baseball; he may have been the best overall defender, period.
In other words, he’s a legitimate candidate for the Platinum Glove award.

— Rawlings Baseball (@RawlingsSports) November 2, 2026Sure, PCA had a few glaringly bad gaffes this season, most of which were early in the year, but the whole of his effort and skill is and was largely unparalleled. It was an incredible season (to say the least) … one that will surely result in MVP honors soon enough.
The other winner was Alex Bregman at third base.
Not unlike PCA, the defensive start to Bregman’s season included some uncharacteristically bad plays. Like just straight-up errors and whiffs and bad throws (remember that?). But just as the switch flipped on Bregman’s offensive performance as the season continued, his defense followed suit. Bregman wound up being nails at third base, finishing with the second-highest Def rating of his career.
This was the second Gold Glove award for both Pete Crow-Armstrong (2025, 2026) and Alex Bregman (2024, 2026).
I can’t say any of the other guys were snubbed, but it would have been nice for Ian Happ to get his fifth straight or for Seiya Suzuki to notch his first. The former was just as good as ever out in left field, while Suzuki surprisingly turned himself into a legitimate Gold Glove nominee. As for Dansby Swanson, shrug. He is very, very good at shortstop. Gold Glove or not.
And as for Nico Hoerner, who feels like he SHOULD have been a nominee, I think Brett put it well when the nominees were announced:
Although it’s weird not to see Nico Hoerner there as a finalist at second base, it’s more or less inarguable that Wetherholt, Lowe, and Turang beat him out by quite a bit on the advanced metrics (even when accounting for the time Hoerner spent at shortstop). That isn’t the end-all be-all of the Gold Glove, but it’s an important factor, and it’s one of the few objective reference points for those of us who aren’t just voting with our eyes. There’s an argument that Hoerner was the 4th best defensive second baseman in all of baseball this year … it’s just that the three guys ahead of him were all in the NL. All in the NL Central, in fact!
And like Swanson, it’s like … okay. Maybe he’s not a Gold Glove winner (or even nominee), but he’s obviously more than good enough at his position. He’s not even a bad shortstop!
As a reminder, two of the five Cubs nominees, Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki, are both now free agents. If you’re looking for more on any/all of the outgoing Chicago Cubs, I have that information here.
