The Sarah Moody Art Gallery unveiled an exhibit by visual artist Laylah Ali titled “The Answers to Your Questions: Drawings and Paintings by Laylah Ali” on Oct. 14 that will remain in the gallery until Dec. 11.
The exhibit displays works from Ali, whose art uses references from ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and the traditions of American folk art. The exhibit includes pieces from six different series that span across a 30-year time period. The pieces in the exhibit primarily include people conjured from Ali’s mind, from portraits to individuals performing tasks.
Because the exhibit spans across three decades, Ali did not pinpoint a specific source of inspiration, but rather described her overall artistic inspiration.
“I am very interested in power dynamics and what forms they take,” Ali said. “Big, small, political, personal, predictable, unpredictable.”
The director of the Sarah Moody Art Gallery,William Dooley, said Ali was “very involved” in the process of curating Ali’s exhibit and highlighted her involvement in the process.
Aside from the physical displaying of the pieces, Ali also had a hand in the design and aesthetics of the gallery itself, considering how the public could interact with her work.
“The works are subject to damage, so we came up with some creative ways to manage the lighting,” Dooley said. “We also painted the walls gray, which she picked out, trying to think about how people move through the space.”
Ali decided on which pieces to use for the exhibit by configuring her work with the physical space of the art gallery, stating how she hoped it served as “an introduction to [her] work.” She said the themes of power dynamics are evident throughout the exhibit, with the images portraying detailed artistic techniques such as hatching and cross-hatching.
“Laylah’s work is very thought-provoking and very well executed,” said Vicki Rial, the art gallery’s exhibitions coordinator. “She [creates] with so much intensity, and it’s important for students to see that kind of work ethic.”
Ali ensures that viewers are able to bring their individual thoughts and interpretations to her work in an effort to interact with it. This includes omitting a title from many of her pieces, leaving it up to the viewers’ interpretations.
“I worked with Laylah while setting everything up, and she walked through the exhibit with me,” said Isabella Gerbino, a sophomore art history major. “Most of the paintings are untitled because she wants the viewer to find their meaning.”
Ali’s aim for the exhibit is to allow viewers to “exercise the ability to be genuinely curious,” and open-minded about people outside of their typical social circles.
“University is a great place to step outside of your usual experiences,” Ali said. “I would argue it is a necessary part of a college education.”
