Crystal Hefner is reflecting on her marriage to Hugh Hefner, and she says she would make a very different choice if she could go back in time.
In a new interview with Page Six, published Octover 31, the former Playboy Playmate, 40, said she regrets marrying the magazine founder, who died in September 2017 at age 91. Crystal, who married Hugh in 2012, also alleged that he deliberately sought out women he believed would be easier to control.
“If I could go back, I absolutely wouldn’t have [married Hugh],” she told the outlet.
“I came from a broken home. I didn’t have a father. And I know now that Hef chose people he could easily manipulate, like that was it,” she added.
Crystal went on to suggest that Hugh preferred partners he believed were less intellectually equipped to challenge him. She said she now believes that women with more confidence and independence would have been harder for him to control.
“Hef allegedly had a high IQ,” Crystal told the outlet. “I always thought, why didn’t he want somebody that was at his level intellectually? And it’s because those people are harder to control. So he chose the women that came from broken homes and broken backgrounds.”
The comments are the latest in a series of public statements Crystal has made about her experiences at the Playboy Mansion and during her marriage.
In an Oct. 27 appearance on the Lisa Guerrero Unleashed podcast, Crystal described sexual encounters that she said left her uncomfortable and in pain. When asked whether she believed she had been sexually assaulted, she said she had done what Hugh wanted, including when it came to sex.
“In the bedroom things would happen that ended up just not being OK,” she said on the podcast.
Crystal also alleged that Hugh pressured women into sexual situations they did not want, including an incident involving twin sisters Kristina and Karissa Shannon. Her claims have not been independently established.
In October, Crystal also publicly urged actor Jessica Biel to reconsider playing Hugh’s wife in the upcoming film Playmates if the project intended to romanticize him or the Playboy world. In a message shared publicly, she alleged that she experienced sexual, emotional, financial and physical abuse during her marriage.

Crystal has previously discussed her experiences in her 2024 memoir, Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself, in which she reflected on the complicated dynamics of life inside the mansion.
Hugh founded Playboy in 1953 and became known for his lavish lifestyle and relationships with much younger women. Crystal met him at a Halloween party at the Playboy Mansion in 2008, later becoming one of his girlfriends before they married on New Year’s Eve in 2012. They remained married until his death.
