The magic of Matilda still lives on. According to People, Danny DeVito, who starred in and directed the 1996 film adaptation of the Roald Dahl children’s book, hosted a 30th anniversary special live-narrated screening of the movie at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Oct. 30. At the event, the 81-year-old actor surprised fans by bringing out a few familiar faces.
“We do have a very special surprise tonight,” Matilda composer David Newman, whose score was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra at the screening, said in a pre-film talk.
After Newman’s remarks, DeVito told the audience that Mara Wilson, who played the titular book lover with telekinetic abilities in the 1996 film, and other members of the cast would be joining him onstage. Later, Pam Ferris, who played Miss Trunchbull, Kiami Daveal, who played Lavender, Jacqueline Steiger, who played Amanda Thripp and Kira Spencer Hesser, who played Hortensia, joined Wilson and DeVito onstage much to the audience’s delight.
After the event, Wilson reflected on the special reunion in an Instagram post.
“Matilda 30th Anniversary Celebration at Royal Albert Hall in London!” she wrote alongside a picture of the cast together. “Five thousand Matilda fans! I still cannot believe it!” Wilson continued. “What a joy to celebrate with people who mean so much to me, with whom I share so many wonderful memories. Jaki, Kiami, Pam, Kira, David Newman, and of course, Uncle Danny, I love you all.”
