For Kirsten Vangsness, the news about Criminal Minds came with barely enough time to prepare for goodbye.
The actress, who has spent two decades playing fan-favorite analyst Penelope Garcia, revealed that she learned the long-running crime drama was ending shortly before the announcement became public.
Vangsness addressed the development in an Instagram video, sharing her feelings about the franchise’s unexpected final chapter.
Despite the disappointment, she also expressed gratitude for having been part of a series that lasted far longer than most television shows.
The actress found out about the cancellation just 90 minutes before the news was announced publicly.
Reflecting on the show’s remarkable run, Vangsness acknowledged how unusual it was for a television series to last so long.
“Look how long, that doesn’t happen ever,” she said.
But the actress isn’t entirely ready to close the door on Penelope Garcia’s story. She suggested that there could still be more adventures ahead if the franchise finds another home.
“But I love my job and my boss Erica Messer says there’s so many more stories to tell. So, if we get to keep telling them somewhere, that would be amazing,” she shared.
Her comments offer a glimmer of hope for fans who aren’t ready to say goodbye to the Behavioral Analysis Unit.
Vangsness wasn’t the only cast member reflecting on the show’s future.
R.J. Hatanaka, who plays FBI agent Tyler Green, shared a photograph of the cast on social media, describing them as “the finest group of people.”
A.J. Cook, who portrays Jennifer “JJ” Jareau, reshared the photograph and expressed her affection for her fellow cast members.
“These people own my heart forever and always,” she wrote.
Aisha Tyler, who plays Dr. Tara Lewis, also shared the photograph, adding, “Family for life.”
