There’s no shortage of ways to celebrate Halloween. And when you’re a huge fan of the holiday, it’s easy to get into the weeds quickly while trying to outdo yourself with cute “spooky season” touches throughout the day.
I’m all about infusing Halloween into everyday foods. I give my kids peanut butter sandwiches cut into the shape of a bat, put ghost-shaped slices of cheese into lunches and toss black and orange sprinkles on yogurt to try to appeal to little palates. But I’m always looking for fun and easy ways to add extra flair into daily life without a huge effort on my end. So, when I came across “witches’ brooms” on TikTok, I had to give them a go.
These adorable little treats use just two ingredients to create a snack that doubles as functional decor. It’s a salty and sweet snack, creating the perfect flavor combination for Halloween fans of any age. Witches’ brooms are also petite, so you don’t have to worry about anyone spoiling their appetite before dinner.
But while witches’ brooms are easy to pull together, there is a little trickery involved to make the assembly process as simple as it sounds. Here’s what I discovered while creating them at home.

Why These 2-Ingredient Witches’ Brooms Are the Ultimate Last-Minute Treat
I bought the ingredients for witches’ brooms long before I actually assembled them. So when I found out that friends were coming over last-minute with pizza, it seemed like the perfect time to put these together.
I ended up sweating a little after I assumed that I could toss these together at the last second and ran into a few snafus. While the process was slightly more in-depth than I envisioned, creating witches’ brooms still isn’t nearly as involved as something like making cupcakes or cookies. And they can still take under five minutes to make—especially with my tips and learnings below.
Whether you’re having friends over, hosting a full-on Halloween party or headed somewhere where you’ll need to bring a themed dessert, these are a solid option to reach for.

You may have ingredients for witches’ brooms in your pantry already. Here’s what you’ll need:

Assembling Halloween broomsticks sounds simple in theory—and it can be. A lot depends on the temperature of the room where you’re putting them together, and how melty the chocolate is.
To put your witches’ brooms together, simply lay your Reese’s Minis upside-down (with the wide part on the plate or tray). Then, gently slide a pretzel stick into the middle to create a “broom.”
Here’s where things get unexpectedly complicated: Pretzel sticks are a pretty delicate ingredient, and if your chocolate is too hard or if you push too forcefully, you’re going to end up with some broken sticks and broken dreams.

I ended up developing a few hacks to make the process more seamless and to minimize waste. My house was chilly, so I ended up putting the Reese’s Minis in the microwave for five seconds. (Every person’s microwave is slightly different, so there may be a little trial and error here.)
That ended up softening the top of the chocolate enough to create extra give for those pretzel sticks. Before nuking the peanut butter cups, I cut a small X on top of each candy. This meant that I wasn’t solely relying on the pretzel sticks to break the surface of the peanut butter cups, and allowed them to slide in a little easier.

You’ll want to go slow with your pretzel stick insertion. It also helps to grip your stick low and closer to your chocolate to try to minimize force on the stick itself.
My Top Trick To Stop the Chocolate From Cracking
This is another issue I didn’t see coming. Reese’s Minis are petite, which means you’re trying to push a good-sized object (your stick) into something tiny. As a result, your peanut butter cup will be prone to cracking if you don’t approach this process delicately.
Cours
I had the most success with using my thumb and forefinger to grip and encircle the Reese’s cup after I put it in the microwave. This allowed me to apply gentle pressure to the cup to keep it in place while I was pushing the pretzel stick inside.
I did get a few slightly cracked cups, but I just kept an eye out for them and gently patted them back into place. Because the chocolate was slightly soft at that point, it wasn’t an issue I couldn’t bounce back from.
Common Questions & Easy Variations
Here are some helpful tips and tricks.
Can I make these ahead of time?
You can definitely make witches’ brooms ahead of time. You can create these and store them in the fridge or freezer before serving them if you have room. Because both ingredients are shelf-stable, you can also consider placing them on a cake platter and storing them that way before serving.
What if I have a peanut allergy?
Reese’s Minis are a great option for your broom base, but they’re not the only thing you can try. If you have a peanut allergy, consider using these as your broom base:
Rolos Hershey’s Kisses Sunflower butter cupsHow do you make savory witches’ brooms?
You can make savory witches’ broomsticks a few different ways, but the most popular option is with cheese and pretzel brooms. These involve cutting string cheese sticks in half (and then turning them into a fringe), with pretzel sticks on top. Tie fresh chives around the top of your broom base to pull it all together.
