An absolute STUNNER on Friday night — the worst nightmare for Tampa Bay Lightning fans. Elliotte Friedman is reporting superstar forward Nikita Kucherov has asked for a trade.
“According to multiple sources, Nikita Kucherov has informed both his teammates and the Lightning organization that he will not be re-signing with Tampa Bay and would like to be traded.
The exact reasons are unclear at this point, but Kucherov — the NHL’s reigning MVP — is in the final season of an eight-year, $76-million contract. Last week, he passed Steven Stamkos as the leading scorer in franchise history.
Both Lightning GM Julien BriseBois and Dan Milstein, Kucherov’s agent, declined to comment.”
Kucherov, 33, isn’t only the reigning MVP. He’s a two-time Hart Trophy winner, a three-time Art Ross winner two-time Ted Lindsay Award winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion. And, at some point down the road, he will be a first ballot Hockey Hall of Fame inductee.
This is shocking news, and crushing for a Tampa market that just watched their Rays get boat raced out of the World Series by the Brewers.
Kucherov has 15 points (4 goals, 11 assists) in his first 12 games of the 2026-27 season.
Should the Chicago Blackhawks make a play for him? That would depend on whether he would play in Chicago or not — which likely would depend significantly on his experience with Jeff Blashill as an assistant coach before he left for the Blackhawks’ job. And if he thinks the Hawks could compete… at some point. And if the Blackhawks are willing to pay him a boatload of money.
The Hawks certainly have the requisite boatload of assets to make an offer. But I doubt he’s at a point in his career where he would choose to try to save a season and sign an extension with where the Blackhawks are at currently.
But this is absolutely stunning.
