Lloyd Garner, spotter and close confidant of NASCAR racer Corey Heim, has died at 54. Garner’s obituary states that he died on Oct. 28 after his battle with cancer.
According to EssentiallySports, Heim credited Garner for his rise as a NASCAR driver.
“He’s the man. He’s a big part of my development. You know, he spotted me all the way through my beginning in late models and did some ARCA with me as well,” Heim said before the 2026 ValleyStar Credit Union 300.
Members of the NASCAR community have mourned Garner’s loss with multiple heartfelt statements and stories about him. Short Track Scene reported that Garner was fondly nicknamed “Sleepy Lloyd” for his habit of taking naps almost everywhere.
“Lloyd, you were a real one. I’ll forever love you. I’ll miss the talks and calls, but you’re in a better place now. Welcome to life’s victory lane, Lloyd,” said spotter Jonathon Platt.
“For as long as I can remember, he’s stood right beside me in the spotter stand,” said Eric Roll, another spotter. “We’ve had lunches, dinners, shared hotel rooms, countless hours on the phone two… three times a week, and he was the first person I looked for when I got to the racetrack. He was like my other half.”
“Lloyd Garner was such a good dude, man. He was always thoughtful and kind. He was a total vibe at all times. He’s won with more big names than you’d realize. Drivers loved and trusted having him in their ear. Rest easy, big man,” wrote Matt Weaver, Senior NASCAR Editor.
Lloyd Garner’s battle with cancer was publicly revealed in September 2026, with his sister starting a GoFundMe campaign to help with his medical expenses. Family, friends, and loved ones will celebrate Garner’s life with a ceremony at the Hickory Motor Speedway on Nov. 2.
