The BMX SolidSafe Duo combines a 5,000mAh battery, magnetic wireless charging, a rotating kickstand, and a color display, but does its charging performance justify the price?

I feel like the game has changed once again with the iPhone Duo. For so long, we’ve been living with the same types of iPhone designs and our accessories have largely followed suit. At this point, I know that I can’t survive without a portable battery. So I was thrilled to get my hands on the BMX SolidSafe Duo 5K Magnetic Power Bank, which was specially designed for the iPhone Duo.

About the BMX SolidSafe Duo 5K Magnetic Power Bank

The BMX SolidSafe Duo 5K Magnetic Power Bank is a compact portable charger designed to combine everyday charging convenience with a few useful extras. Featuring a 5,000mAh battery, magnetic wireless charging, and up to 20W wired USB-C output, it offers multiple ways to keep compatible smartphones powered throughout the day. The charger also features a built-in USB-C cable, a color display that shows battery percentage and charging wattage, and a 360-degree rotating ring stand for hands-free viewing in portrait or landscape orientation. Its aluminum housing and semi-solid-state battery technology further distinguish it from traditional portable chargers, making it an interesting option for users looking for a versatile charging accessory.

    User Experience

The power bank comes in a BMX-branded box and features an image of the product on the front. There is a lot of wording on the box and the cover of the box opens up to reveal design features of the battery. When you take the power bank out of the box, you’ll find a user manual with it. The power bank has detachable USB-C charging cable disguised as the lanyard. There is a foldable ring stand that pops out from the display side of the power bank.

The magnetic side is designed to line up with the MagSafe charging surface on the iPhone Duo. I found that it will also work nicely with the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max, too. The kickstand is strong enough to hold either device up securely it’s just at a lower angle. There is a USB-C charging port on the bottom of the power bank that is used for recharging the battery itself or for charging a second device through a wired connection.

The BMX SolidSafe Duo 5K Magnetic Power Bank was easy to use with both the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 18 Pro. I found the magnetic connection plenty strong enough to keep the power bank attached to the back of either phone, and it maintained a solid connection while charging. The magnetic strength was also sufficient to hold the phone up when using the built-in kickstand, which made it convenient for hands-free viewing.

The color display is also useful and something I really like seeing on chargers these days. It’s bright, easy to read, and provides helpful information about the power bank’s current status. When it isn’t charging a phone, the display shows the remaining battery percentage. You do have to tap the power button on the side of the power bank to activate the display. When charging is active, it displays the Qi2 indicator, current output wattage, and a small animated ring to indicate that power is being delivered. I appreciate being able to see both the remaining battery level and how much power the device is supplying. However, the BMX logo animation that appears when the display starts up feels a little unnecessary. It’s a nice visual touch, but I would prefer a shorter animation so I can get to the charging information more quickly.

As much as I like the design of the BMX SolidSafe Duo 5K Magnetic Power Bank, I have to admit that its charging performance wasn’t what I expected. I conducted a 30-minute wireless charging test with the iPhone Duo starting at 20% battery. At the end of the test, the phone had reached 30%, averaging approximately 0.33 percentage points per minute, or about 1% every three minutes. Meanwhile, the power bank’s battery level dropped from 63% to 48%. After the test, the iPhone estimated that it would need another 54 minutes of charging to reach 80%.

During testing, I observed wireless output reaching approximately 7W with the iPhone Duo and 5W with the iPhone 18 Pro. For context, the SolidSafe Duo is advertised to support up to 15W wireless charging, making the 7W output I observed less than half of its advertised maximum. I also tested the power bank using its attached USB-C cable, but the output remained in the 5W to 7W range, well below the advertised maximum of 20W.

Charging speeds can vary depending on the phone, battery level, temperature, and other conditions, so these results don’t necessarily represent the power bank’s maximum capabilities. However, I was disappointed that I didn’t see output closer to the advertised rates during my testing. While the SolidSafe Duo has a convenient design and useful features, I would have liked to see better charging performance to make the most of them.

Heat was another factor I monitored during charging. The ambient temperature was approximately 85°F when I started, and after 30 minutes, the surface of the power bank and the iPhone’s MagSafe charging area measured between 108°F and 109°F. Both devices became noticeably warm during the test. These measurements reflect the conditions of my testing and don’t, on their own, establish whether the temperatures are outside the devices’ normal operating ranges. Still, it’s something I would keep an eye on during longer charging sessions, particularly in a warm environment.

    Conclusion

Overall, I like the SolidSafe Duo’s strong magnetic attachment, practical kickstand, and informative display. Those features make it convenient to use, especially when I want to prop up my phone while it charges. However, the charging speeds I observed were disappointing compared with the advertised maximum output, and the amount of heat generated is worth noting. I’d like to see better charging performance to make the most of the features this power bank offers.
