Given Donald Trump’s proclivity to only recognise the outcome of elections that Republicans win, his opponents had only one job: do nothing that might feed his argument that it’s the Democrats who are undermining American election integrity.
It now appears that Mary Peltola – the Democrat campaigning for an all-important Senate seat in Alaska in Tuesday’s US midterm elections – never got that memo.
In the final week of this year’s midterm cycle, the elections have been upended by stunning news of Democrat-orchestrated dirty tricks in Alaska that afforded Trump the opportunity to call for Peltola’s name to be removed from the ballot due to what he insisted was her involvement in “ELECTION FRAUD”.
For months, Peltola has insisted that neither she nor her campaign had anything to do with the mystery appearance of a third candidate on Alaska’s ballot paper named Daniel J Sullivan. Sullivan, a retired teacher from a remote fishing village in the Alaska Panhandle, has no previous experience of running for office, and his candidacy came as a surprise to Republican Party grandees.
Their alarm bells rang because the incumbent Republican Senator battling for re-election is named Dan S. Sullivan.
The appearance of another Dan Sullivan on the ballot did not pass the smell test as far as Republicans were concerned, but Democrats denied vehemently that the former teacher had been recruited in an effort to confuse Republican voters and siphon support away from the party’s legitimate, incumbent candidate.

Alaska’s Supreme Court ruled in June that both Sullivans could appear on the ballot, and last week Trump’s lawyers offered no concrete evidence that the Democratic Party had orchestrated attempted voter fraud.
But on Wednesday, The New York Times provided evidence aplenty that operatives aligned with Peltola “spent months recruiting candidates to peel votes away” from Senator Sullivan.
In a nation that anticipates an “October Surprise” in every election cycle, the newspaper’s investigation found that Democrats spent months scouring Alaska to find another Dan Sullivan willing to run as a Republican against the real one. Democratic Party operatives are reported to have spent the summer “combing through voter records to produce a list of Dan Sullivans from across the state”.
Peltola’s former campaign manager, Elisa Rios, told The New York Times that the Democratic candidate was “definitely aware” of the project to try and split the Republican vote. “Voters should get the full picture when making their decision,” she said.
It now turns out that the second Dan Sullivan may not be the only allegedly fraudulent candidate appearing on the Alaska ballot. News Nation TV reported on Wednesday that another Republican, Gerald Heikes, claims that he was also recruited by an “operative” who met with him, urged him to get in the race as a Republican, and promised to support him if he did.

Its website offers no indication of how it is funded, and under federal law it is not required to unmask its donors until after the election has ended next week. Republicans believe it is supported by Democrats specifically seeking to fund campaigns designed to create voter confusion.
Peltola’s campaign, a narrow two points ahead of Senator Sullivan in opinion polls, continues to deny any involvement in the subterfuge. “Our campaign is focused on lowering costs and fixing the rigged system in DC and did not recruit any candidates into the race,” the Peltola campaign insists. But Trump is welcoming the Democrats’ own goal, which plays directly into his false claims that his opponents are unable to win elections fair and square.
“The Democrats cheated!” he fumed on his Truth Social account, claiming the recruitment of the second Sullivan was carried out “in order to defraud, confuse, and obfuscate the Election, thereby taking votes away from the REAL Senator”. In a cadence that may be repeated ceaselessly after polling closes nationwide next Tuesday, Trump insisted the Alaska Democrats are committing “Voter Fraud at the Highest Level”.
Earlier this week, the President was asked whether he will respect the midterms’ outcome. “I will, if they’re honest elections,” he answered. Now, from Alaska, comes an unexpected last-minute gift that may grease the wheels of Trump’s efforts to portray the national election results as illegitimate.
The nightmare scenario for the country will play out if control of the Senate is so evenly poised that it hinges on the outcome of the Alaska race. Democrats, and indeed the country, may rue the day they lit upon their wizard wheeze in the Alaska outback.
