The Red Sox are hiring Astros major league field coordinator and outfield coach Jason Bell and adding him to their major league coaching staff, reports Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. His specific role is still being finalized, Chandler Rome of The Athletic adds.
It’s the latest shuffling involving what should be a revamped Astros staff in 2027. Owner Jim Crane opted not to retain manager Joe Espada earlier this month and also dismissed five coaches while reassigning bench coach Omar Lopez to a new role within the organization. At the time, the Astros indicated that Bell was one of four coaches who’d be retained, joining pitching coach Josh Miller, hitting coach Victor Rodriguez and first base coach Dave Clark. Instead, it seems Bell was granted to interview for an opportunity in Boston and will now pack his bags for Fenway Park.
Bell, 36, joined the Astros organization as a development coach in 2017. He’s since managed in their minor league system, spent a half decade as the minor league field coordinator, and has now spent the past three seasons as a uniformed coach on the big league staff. The Astros were his first stop in pro ball, but he’s previously been the director of baseball operations for Ohio University and served as the pitching coach at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore. McTaggart profiled Bell’s atypical path to a major league coaching staff back in 2024, when he was first hired.
The Red Sox have plenty of balls in the air when it comes to their coaching staff. Their April firing of manager Alex Cora and five coaches led to several minor league coaches being summoned to the big league staff on an interim basis. In the case of Triple-A skipper Chad Tracy, who took over for Cora as interim manager, the “interim” label has now been shed. He’s signed a three-year deal to take over as the permanent skipper.
Since the season concluded, the Sox have made some changes on the staff. They shifted interim third base coach Chad Epperson to a new role, installing him as the manager of their Triple-A club in Worcester. Interim first base coach Pablo Cabrera is reportedly returning to his prior role as the organization’s minor league field coordinator. Three other members of the ’26 staff — bench coach José David Flores, hitting coaches Collin Hetzler and Nelson Paulino, and assistant hitting coach Jack Simonetty — all still have “interim” labels attached to their titles. It’s possible Bell will slide into one of those roles, but the club could create a new role for him that didn’t exist on the prior staff.
