BATAVIA, N.Y. — Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained a Syrian national working as a lab technician in Western New York and are holding him at the ICE facility in Batavia.
News10NBC’s Buffalo affiliate met with the detainee at the facility on Saturday morning.
The man, who asked to be identified as George, sought asylum in the United States in 2023 and was arrested last month in Buffalo, our affiliate says. George has no criminal record but does have a pending asylum case.
“They are allowed to stay in the country and in the past even under the first Trump administration, they did not routinely go around and arrest people who were in that posture,” Immigration Attorney Matthew Borowski told our affiliate.
Our affiliate reached out to ICE for comment but has not received a response yet.
