Miranda Lambert Gets Honest About the ‘Misery’ of Her Divorce From Blake Shelton 11 Years Later

More than a decade after her divorce from Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert is reflecting on the difficult period and how she channeled her heartbreak into songwriting.

“I got divorced and that sucks for anyone, especially in the public eye, especially on tour, especially in the middle of a very public career, two of us, you know what I mean? It just was a really not fun time,” Lambert said on Ross Golan’s “And the Writer Is…” podcast.

After the split, Lambert moved back to Nashville and threw herself into her work. “I, in the meantime, had moved back to Nashville full-time, and so I dove headfirst into songwriting.”

The country star had previously lived with Shelton in Oklahoma. The couple announced their divorce in 2015 after four years of marriage.

Lambert went on to use that chapter of her life as inspiration for her sixth studio album, The Weight of These Wings. Looking back on her return to Nashville, she described how she turned her personal struggles into new music.

“When I moved back [to Nashville] in 2015, I gathered up all of my friends and relationships from, you know, all of the previous years and just used it, used the misery,” she said. “I used the staying out too late at honky-tonks. I used what I was living and my friends went on that journey with me, friends being songwriters, and I think I wrote 75 songs in, like, a year. I mean, in, like, the first four months I moved back.”

Both singers eventually found love again. Shelton married singer Gwen Stefani in 2021, while Lambert announced in February 2019 that she had secretly wed Brendan McLoughlin, a former New York City Police Department officer. The two had begun dating just three weeks before their wedding.

Lambert and McLoughlin have since made several public appearances together, including at the 2026 Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas earlier this year. Lambert took home two awards and performed her track “Crisco” during the event.

McLoughlin was also spotted cheering as Ella Langley accepted the Single of the Year win for “Choosin’ Texas,” which Lambert cowrote and produced.

In a 2024 interview with Us Weekly, Lambert opened up about how McLoughlin helps her navigate life’s challenges, explaining that he isn’t afraid to call her out when necessary.

“He calls me out, and I love that. I need that,” she said. “I don’t think it’s healthy that people, especially artists or celebrities, surround themself with yes people. If you surround yourself with a group of people who are honest with you, you’ll go a lot farther, and it’s a lot healthier in the long run.”
