Actor Michael Kearns’ cause of death has been revealed three weeks after he died at age 76.
According to PEOPLE, Kearns died of cardiopulmonary arrest on Oct. 5. This was stated on the actor’s death certificate obtained from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, with coronary artery disease listed as an underlying cause of death.
Kearns’ death was initially reported on Oct. 7 by his friend, journalist Karen Ocamb, in the Los Angeles Blade. Filmmaker/professor Ronald Palencia also confirmed his death in a heartfelt tribute on Facebook, saying Kearns had been in an out of emergency rooms during his final months.
“Michael Kearns was a friend, mentor, neighbor, and my movie buddy,” Palencia wrote. “For the past year, we watched an average of a movie a month…It is a strange feeling to know we will not see the living Michael again, who spoke in hyperbolic, superlative tones. For him, nothing in life was small enough; everything had magnified significance. He himself and his legacy are larger than life.”

Known for his roles in films and TV shows like Body Double, Cheers , and Beverly Hills, 90210, Kearns is famously one of Hollywood’s first openly gay actors. After coming out as gay in the ’70s, he made history again in the ’90s when he revealed his HIV diagnosis on national television.
“HIV is nothing to be ashamed of. For me to remain silent indicates shame or fear on some level,” Kearns said at the time.
“I felt that not one more HIV-infected actor or anyone else should die in shame,” he said in a 1991 interview for Bay Area Reporter.
Kearns died just six days before he was supposed to star in a performance honoring LGBTQ+ theater history. The actor and trailblazing AIDS activist is survived by his adopted daughter, Tia Katherine.
