Were you nudged towards a stage when you were a kid, and you didn’t really want to go? Well, Dave Grohl was. At around 10 years old, Grohl put a pillow over his face and screamed for about three hours, hoping to lose his voice before a school audition. He told the story to Jimmy Kimmel and connected it, half in jest, to “Child Actor,” a song on the latest Foo Fighters album.
The setup, as Grohl tells it, began with his mother, a high school English teacher who was part of the school’s drama department. The high school was staging The King and I, and she asked him to try out for the part of the Prince. “I didn’t want to say no,” he said. He prepared the Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon” to sing and play on guitar. The day before the audition, the dread set in, and the pillow came out.
The scream did not get him out of the audition. Grohl told the director he had blown out his voice, and the director told him to try anyway. He played “Rocky Raccoon” with a messed-up voice and did not get the part. A friend landed the role. Grohl became the understudy.

Kimmel had asked whether the song “Child Actor” was a literal interpretation. Grohl first described it as a song about people who perform a version of themselves to win other people’s acceptance, while real validation has to begin inside. The audition story came next, and he tied the two together to laughter, saying “that’s what Child Actor is about.”
“Child Actor” appears on Your Favorite Toy, the twelfth Foo Fighters studio album, which was released April 24 and follows 2023’s But Here We Are.
Screaming is also the sound Grohl is known for. He has said on the Dish podcast that he has been “working on this scream for 30 years now.”
Foo Fighters are the musical guests on Jimmy Kimmel Live! for four straight nights, Monday through Thursday. The band played “Window,” another cut from Your Favorite Toy, on the show. Grohl said the song began as an easy riff for his daughter Harper, who was learning bass, and that its lyrics came from imagining a hotel window cleaner who sees guests at their most private moments.
Your Favorite Toy runs ten tracks and just over half an hour, and Grohl describes its sound as loud, hard and chaotic. The pillow story adds a childhood-sized counterpart to the themes running through the album, which focus on performing, validation and being watched. Foo Fighters remain on tour in support of the record.
