Bulls Have No Answer for Celtics’ Dominant Offense, Fall 134-99

A 1-3 start is a stark difference from the Bulls’ 5-0 start last season, but it may be a while before we see Chicago win again.

Tonight, they made the trip to Boston and TD Garden to play the Celtics, only to get yet another reminder of how far the Bulls are from actually being good. There are very few things to be positive about in a 134-99, 35-point loss, but there are a lot of mistakes for us to break down.

The worst part? The Bulls play the Celtics again later this week in NBA Cup action. So Tiago Splitter will really have to try to figure this team out as quickly as possible if Chicago wants any chance of staying competitive and coming away with a win.

More Poor Starts & Shooting Woes

Can Chicago Bulls games become a recap template and I just replace the date and opponent? Because it was the Bulls’ fourth game of the season, and they had another bad start to the game, and once again, it was because of their shooting.

The Bulls were outscored 33-21 at the end of the first quarter, making them a team that still has not scored more than 27 points in the opening quarter yet. And that becomes a problem when they almost always let their opponent do exactly that. You don’t have to look too far to find out where that came from, either. The Bulls, who are top-five in the league in three-pointers attempted and last in percentage made, shot 2-10 from behind the arc to start the game.

In the second quarter, the game was a bit more evenly matched, with the Bulls matching the Celtics in scoring despite Jayson Tatum’s first-half line of 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. But the problem is, once you’re down in a ditch, all you can do for the rest of the game is chase and try to cut into the lead. You can’t afford to have a 33-33 quarter.

Some of the positives have to be Caleb Wilson, who had 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal in the first half. He was generating his own offense and picking up some big momentum-swinging highlights, like his incredible play to beat Paul George.

Leonard Miller was great as always off the bench, with a near double-double at halftime with 7 points and 8 rebounds. This might also be the first signs of scoring life we’ve seen from Josh Giddey this season, with 11 points on nearly 67% shooting from the field.

And Norman Powell’s 13 points are leading the team, and he’s shooting it well from both the field and behind the arc, making three 3s on just five attempts. Powell’s scoring has kept Chicago at least in the game so far, but the team was still down 66-54 at the end of the first half.

Not an impossible comeback, but I just hate that Chicago is in this position again because of the same mistakes.

The Moment the Bulls Lost the Game

Yes, a bad first quarter was bad, but how about an even worse third quarter?

Chicago got torched by Payton Pritchard and Paul George in that third quarter and just had no answer for either of them. 10 points for PG and 19 points on 5/5 from three for Payton Pritchard, who single-handedly almost matched Chicago’s entire scoring output.

And okay, we know the Celtics are a good offensive team, but the Bulls did themselves no favors either.

Zach Collins, who just got extended this offseason, was awful. For some reason, he kept attempting threes during Boston’s run, forced a Bulls turnover by making Norman Powell take a bad shot to beat the shot clock, and had some possessions guarding Pritchard, who got hot in that quarter.

Buddy Hield got the worst of the Pritchard matchup though.

And just like that, the Bulls went down 30+ points with just 12 minutes to go, making the fourth quarter nothing more than glorified garbage time.

Some “FUN” stats from the night:

Chicago TOs: 24 | Boston TOs: 24Chicago points off TOs: 17 | Boston points off TOs: 39

    Bench points: Boston 79 | Chicago 33Points in the paint: Boston 46 | Chicago 30Fast-break points: Boston 17 | Chicago 8Rebounds: Boston 65 | Chicago 53

    3-point percentage: Boston 48% on 44 attempts | Chicago 27% on 44 attempts

Total domination from the Boston Celtics, who played out the exact kind of style and identity the Bulls are trying to build, just way, way, way better.
